Reuters reported on October 19 that the valuation could exceed $1.4 trillion; the $1.25 trillion figure is CNBC's.
Reuters reported on October 19 that OpenAI was seeking about $30 billion at a valuation that could exceed $1.4 trillion, above the $1.25 trillion CNBC reported. Reuters cited people familiar with the matter and said talks were still ongoing. SoftBank Group and Abu Dhabi's MGX were negotiating to take part. Neither investor's amount was given. OpenAI's last round closed in March, when it raised $122 billion at an $852 billion valuation, according to Reuters. Reuters also reported that Anthropic's listing is expected in mid-November.
CNBC reported on October 22 that OpenAI is nearing a funding round of up to $30 billion. The round would value the company at $1.25 trillion.
Earlier reporting had already put the round near that level. A $20 billion revenue shortfall was reported on October 8. The $1.25 trillion figure reads as the deal investors were steering toward after that shortfall, not as a fresh reset.
The figure also suggests that demand for frontier AI, the most advanced AI models, is still strong. Governance concerns remain. A California subpoena and state child-safety lawsuits keep weighing on how far backers will stretch.
A deal near $1.25 trillion before Anthropic prices its own initial public offering lets OpenAI set the valuation comparison on its own terms. It would not be measured against a newly listed rival.
