Citizens & Northern reported third-quarter earnings of $0.92 a share, $0.23 above expectations.
President and CEO Brad Scovill said the quarter reflected three things. The first was wider net interest margin, the gap between what the bank earns on loans and what it pays on deposits. The second was an efficiency ratio of 56.11%, which measures running costs as a share of revenue, and it fell during the quarter. The third was a credit for credit losses, a reduction in the reserve the bank holds against loans that may not be repaid. Scovill tied that credit to improved qualitative factors, the judgements the bank makes about the wider economic outlook for its borrowers. He also said loan growth prospects remain positive despite continued paydowns, meaning borrowers are repaying existing loans.
The margin gain is the operating driver management points to. The credit is a different kind of gain. It comes from a reserve adjustment, and it could reverse if the factors behind it weaken. The lower efficiency ratio adds a cost angle to the margin story. The dividend rise to $0.30 from $0.28 would carry more weight if the margin trend holds into the next quarter. Management's view that loan growth remains positive is the forward signal to watch.
