PlayStation 5 pre-orders climb ahead of Grand Theft Auto VI launch
Sensor Tower data shows PlayStation 5 accounts for most pre-sold copies of the game, due November 19.

Grand Theft Auto VI is set for release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on November 19, 2026. It has not yet launched, and the current wave of console demand is tied to pre-orders rather than sales of the finished game.
As of October 20, the title had roughly 6.45 million copies pre-sold, worth about $630 million, according to market intelligence firm Sensor Tower. PlayStation 5 accounted for 74% of those pre-orders, or close to 4.8 million copies.
Earlier in 2026, other reported bumps in PlayStation 5 sales were tied to anticipation for the game. GamesRadar, citing analysts and Nielsen IQ data from The Game Business, reported a 17% rise in US PlayStation 5 sales and a 33% jump in UK sales after a Netflix reveal event on September 10. PC Guide, citing idealo data, reported a 348% weekly surge in UK PlayStation 5 Pro sales and a 38% rise in PlayStation 5 Slim sales in mid-September, after pre-orders opened. Separately, Take-Two Interactive's own filings show Grand Theft Auto products made up 12.8% of its net revenue in the three months to June 30, a measure of the franchise's weight for its publisher rather than for Sony's hardware business.
The pattern raises a question for anyone holding Sony stock: how much of PlayStation 5 hardware demand rests on a single title. If that dependence holds, the timing and reception of Grand Theft Auto VI could shape console volumes around its launch. Whether that demand lasts into later quarters, and whether it lifts the rest of Sony's gaming lineup, is what the company's next reports on unit sales and software revenue will need to show.
