The factory sector has lagged services for much of the year. The uptick narrows the gap left by a step down in services growth in September. Taken together, the two series point to growth spread across the economy rather than driven by one part of it. That complicates the view that the September dip in services marks a broad softening, since underlying activity does not appear to be slowing evenly. It also matters for the Federal Reserve, which will weigh whether demand is cooling enough to ease inflation without risking a contraction.
