The talks follow months of tariff escalation between the two countries. Treasury Secretary Bessent is scheduled to meet China's He Lifeng this weekend, along with broader economic teams from both sides, a sign both governments want to avoid further escalation.
No breakthrough has emerged on the core disputes between the two countries: competition over chips, accountability over drug trafficking, or standards for AI development. Until tariffs are actually rolled back or one side makes a substantive concession, the standoff remains unresolved rather than easing.
