President Trump says he had a substantial conversation about artificial intelligence with China's Xi Jinping and that Xi is supportive of AI development. Trump says he plans to sign what he describes as a powerful executive order on AI, though he has not detailed its scope.
Trump made similar remarks about an AI conversation with Xi in the days around last week's summit between the two leaders. That summit also produced $30 billion in tariff cuts between the two countries, with a narrower trade deal due to be detailed the following Monday.
The AI comments land against a backdrop of lobbying by chipmakers. Nvidia and AMD have pressed Washington to soften export limits on chip sales to China, according to Politico reporting from September 21.
Trump and Xi have discussed AI competition and what Trump has called "super intelligence" repeatedly since the summit, and both sides have signaled they intend to keep AI development largely unrestricted rather than impose new guardrails.
