The rotation that defined Tuesday's session, AI and semiconductor names extending their run while financials sold off, sits against a backdrop where diplomacy on Iran is making incremental headway even as the oil market keeps loosening. WTI, which settled at $94.59 during the day, fell further after hours to $89.60 on hopes of increased Gulf supply, a decline that lines up with Iraq's state media report that August exports topped 3 million barrels a day and with Saudi Arabia's move to restart its East-West pipeline and Yanbu loadings ahead of any formal resolution.
On the diplomatic track, envoy Steve Witkoff said he completed "a round of discussions" with Iranian mediators at the UN General Assembly that he hopes will prove "constructive and promising," with mediators continuing their work. Iran's foreign minister Araghchi separately met his Iraqi counterpart and Witkoff, reiterating Tehran's conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz: lifting the naval blockade, releasing frozen assets, and ending fighting across all fronts. Shipping remains severely disrupted, with just two commodity vessels crossing the strait Monday versus a pre-conflict average near 125. Secretary of State Rubio warned separately that a nuclear-armed Iran could threaten closure of the strait and deter outside intervention, while Israel's UN ambassador Danny Danon said Israel knows where Iran's leaders are hiding and would act within days of any attack.
Elsewhere, weekly data showed US crude stocks rising 1.786 million barrels against an expected draw, while gasoline and distillate inventories both fell. Rubio also signed off on a broader Arctic push, with Trump completing a trilateral security deal expanding US bases in Greenland at Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig.
After-hours trading stayed thematic rather than broad-based. VanEck Space ETF (WARP) rose 3.1%, Instacart (CART) added 2.9%, and WisdomTree Quantum Computing Fund (WQTM) gained 2.3%. Voyager Technologies (VOYG) extended its intraday slide, down 7.9% after the close.
Financing activity was active: CoreWeave closed a $4.2 billion convertible note offering, Halozyme Therapeutics closed $1.5 billion in convertibles to refinance existing notes, and Blackstone flagged over $350 million in preliminary realization revenue for the quarter to date. KB Home beat on earnings but flagged weakening housing demand as mortgage rates pressure affordability, a data point that fits uneasily against a market still leaning on rate-cut hopes even as Fed officials keep striking a hawkish tone.
