eBay plans to cut about 9% of its workforce, according to a memo from its chief executive reviewed by Reuters. The memo described the move as part of an effort to simplify operations and focus spending on growth areas.
The company reported about 12,300 employees worldwide as of December 31, 2025, Newsweek reported. That count predates a round of cuts in February 2026, when eBay reduced its global workforce by about 800 jobs, or roughly 6%, to align its structure with strategic priorities, according to TechCrunch. Ahead of that round, eBay had reported fourth-quarter revenue rising 15% to $3 billion, beating analysts' expectations, TechCrunch reported.
This is not eBay's first large-scale reduction. In January 2024 the company cut about 1,000 jobs, or roughly 9% of its workforce, saying staffing and expenses had outpaced growth, Bloomberg reported via Fortune. In February 2023, eBay laid off about 500 employees, roughly 4% of its workforce at the time, citing a slowdown in consumer spending, according to the same report.
The latest reduction fits a pattern among established e-commerce and marketplace operators trimming headcount to concentrate spending on fewer priority areas rather than broad expansion. It signals management is still working to streamline an organization built during a faster-growth era, a process that has already played out at several peers. Whether the cuts translate into durable margin improvement, or simply offset slower top-line growth, will depend on how the freed-up spending is redeployed toward the growth areas the memo references. Coming alongside other large-scale tech layoffs this cycle, the timing keeps the focus on cost discipline as a theme across the sector rather than a decision specific to eBay.
