Moody's reported third-quarter earnings per share of $4.14, 17 cents below the $4.24 analysts had expected, according to MarketBeat. Revenue came in at $2.02 billion, short of the $2.07 billion consensus forecast cited by MarketBeat.
The company's own earnings release, filed with the SEC, shows revenue up 1% from a year earlier, or 3% on an organic constant-currency basis, and diluted EPS up 18% year over year. Moody's reaffirmed its full-year 2026 guidance of diluted EPS between $16.00 and $16.50, and adjusted diluted EPS between $16.50 and $17.00, rather than issuing new guidance for the fourth quarter.
CEO Rob Fauber said the quarter reflected disciplined execution and healthy cash generation amid what he called an increasingly complex operating environment, one he said has made customers more reliant on Moody's independent insights. The board declared a quarterly dividend of $1.03 per share, payable December 11 to shareholders of record as of November 20. Year to date, Moody's has generated $2.47 billion in operating cash flow, up 21%, and returned about $3.1 billion to shareholders, including $2.6 billion in share buybacks, the earnings release shows.
A miss on both earnings and revenue in the same quarter is unusual for ratings and analytics firms, which tend to benefit from steady, subscription-like demand even when bond issuance slows. The shortfall suggests underlying volume, whether in ratings mandates or research subscriptions, came in softer than analysts modeled, rather than reflecting a one-off expense or tax item. Management's description of a more complex environment, paired with continued dividend growth and cash generation, points to a demand issue rather than a balance-sheet one. The question for investors is whether the miss marks a temporary pullback in rated debt activity or a more lasting slowdown that weighs on guidance in the coming quarters.
